How it works

Choose a video and the quality you want. The tool reads the video's sound track, leaving the picture aside, and your browser's own decoder turns the sound back into plain samples. The MP3 encoder then compresses those samples at a constant bitrate of 128, 192 or 320 kbps, so the size shown before you start is the size you get.

Sound at 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz keeps its sample rate; other rates are converted to 44.1 or 48 kHz, and surround sound is mixed down to stereo. The finished MP3 is read back to check it plays before it is offered for download.

To keep the picture instead, use the video to GIF converter; to make a video smaller, use the video compressor.

Questions

How do I convert an MP4 video to MP3?

Choose the video, pick a quality and press Convert to MP3, then download the MP3. Your browser decodes the video's sound and the MP3 encoder makes the file on your device, so nothing is uploaded and a long video doesn't have to upload first.

Which bitrate should I choose: 128, 192 or 320 kbps?

192 kbps, the default, sounds the same as the video for most people and most music. 128 kbps makes smaller files and is plenty for speech, podcasts and lectures. 320 kbps is the most MP3 allows. A higher bitrate can't add detail the video's own sound didn't have.

Can I keep only part of the sound?

Yes. Tick Cut the start or end and type the start and end in seconds, or move the sliders; the picture at that moment is shown so you can find the spot. Only that part goes into the MP3.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read and the MP3 made in your browser, on your device. The MP3 has no title, location or other details from the original.

Limits

Opens MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV videos up to 4 GB, and sound files such as M4A, WAV, Ogg, FLAC and MP3, when your browser can decode their sound. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari decode the AAC, Opus and MP3 sound most videos have; browsers usually can't decode Dolby Digital or DTS. AVI and WMV files can't be opened. Only the main sound track is used. MP3s can be up to 600 MB, about 4 hours at 320 kbps or 10 hours at 128 kbps.

Making the MP3 takes a while for long videos: in testing, a 10-minute video took about a minute on a computer, and phones and older computers take longer. Keep the page open until it finishes.

MP3s are made with LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder, in its JavaScript version (lamejs). This site serves an unmodified copy, with its licence and source.
