How it works

Choose an MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM or MKV video. The page reads it, shows its first frame and what it holds, then writes a new file of the same kind with every sound track left out. A video with more than one sound track, such as a film with several languages, loses all of them.

The picture's own data is copied as it is, so nothing is decoded or encoded again: the picture is exactly as before, at the same size, frame rate and rotation, and it takes moments even for a long video. The new video is read back to check it plays and has no sound left in it before it is offered for download.

To keep only the sound instead, use the video to MP3 converter. To cut the start or end off, use the video trimmer; to crop it or turn it the right way up, the crop and rotate tool; and to make it small enough to send, the video compressor.

Questions

How do I remove the audio from a video?

Choose the video, or drop it on the page. The sound is taken out straight away and the video without it is offered for download, with the same name and -muted on the end. Nothing else changes: the picture is copied as it is, in the same format, so it looks exactly as before and even a long video takes moments.

Does muting a video lower its quality?

No. The picture isn't decoded or encoded again: its own data is copied into the new file unchanged, frame for frame, with the same size, frame rate and rotation. The file gets smaller by the size of the sound it held.

Can I mute an iPhone video?

Yes. iPhone videos are MOV files in HEVC (H.265), and the picture is copied into a new MOV as it is, even in a browser that can't play HEVC. Portrait videos stay upright. The new video has no title, location or camera details from the original; iPhone videos carry the place they were filmed, and it is left out.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read and the copy without sound made in your browser, on your device, so it works offline and a large video doesn't have to upload first. Sites that mute videos on their servers need the whole file sent to them first.

Limits

Opens MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV videos up to 4 GB; AVI and WMV files can't be opened. Only the main picture is kept; subtitles and extra picture tracks are left out. The new video is built in memory, so it can be up to 2 GB, and less on phones with little memory. In testing on a computer, a 10-minute 1080p video of 612 MB was muted in 13 seconds.

The sound is removed, not turned down: there is no setting for a quieter sound, and a part of the video can't be muted on its own. Copying needs no video decoder, so it works in any current browser, including for formats the browser can't play; the first frame is only shown where the browser can decode the video.
