How it works
Choose a video, then type the start and end or move the sliders; the frame at the start or end you are moving is shown, so you can find the spot. Times can be typed in seconds, like 75.5, or in minutes and seconds, like 1:15.5.
Keep original quality copies the video's own data, so its picture and sound are exactly as before and the file stays in its own format: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. Because a copy has to start on a key frame, the page says when it starts earlier than your start, and by how much. Cut exactly decodes the part you chose and encodes it again with your browser's own video encoder, as an H.264 MP4 or, in browsers that can't make H.264, a VP9 WebM, at a bitrate matched to the original. The sound is copied when the new file can hold it.
The trimmed video is read back to check it plays before it is offered for download. To make it smaller too, use the video compressor, which can also cut the start and end; to share a short clip as an image, use the video to GIF converter.
Questions
How do I trim a video without losing quality?
Choose the video, move the start and end to the part you want and keep Keep original quality selected, then press Trim video. The picture and sound are copied into the new file exactly as they were, so nothing is lost, and even a long video takes seconds rather than minutes.
Why does my trimmed video start a little before the start I chose?
Most of a video's frames are stored as changes from the frame before, and only key frames, usually one every second or few, hold a whole picture. A copy can only start on a key frame, so it starts on the one at or before your start, and the page shows that frame and its time first. Choose Cut exactly to start on the very frame you chose; the video is then encoded again.
Can I trim an iPhone video?
Yes. iPhone videos are MOV files in HEVC (H.265), and Keep original quality copies them as they are into a new MOV, even in a browser that can't play HEVC. Showing the frames while you choose and cutting exactly need a browser that decodes HEVC, such as Safari, or Chrome and Edge on most recent computers and phones. Portrait videos stay upright.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is read and the trimmed copy made in your browser, on your device, so it works offline and a large video doesn't have to upload first. The trimmed copy has no title, location or camera details from the original.
Can I cut a part out of the middle?
Not in one go: the trimmer keeps one part, from the start to the end you choose. To keep the parts on either side of a middle section, trim the video twice, once for each part.
Limits
Opens MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV videos up to 4 GB; AVI and WMV files can't be opened. Only the main picture and sound tracks are kept; subtitles and extra sound tracks are left out. The trimmed video is built in memory, so it can be up to 2 GB, and less on phones with little memory.
Cutting exactly needs a browser that can decode the video and encode H.264 or VP9: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can for most videos. In testing, cutting 10 seconds of 720p video exactly took under 3 seconds on a computer; 4K video, long parts and phones take longer, while keeping the original quality takes moments. Videos with a see-through background can only be cut without re-encoding.
