How it works
Choose a video and the size it has to fit. The size is a budget of bits: the tool takes off what the sound and the file's index need, and divides the rest by the length of the video to get the bitrate for the picture. It then picks the largest picture size that still looks clean at that bitrate, and drops a 60 fps video to 30 fps when there aren't enough bits for every frame.
Your browser's own video encoder, the one video calls use, compresses the video on your device. Sound that is already small is copied across unchanged; larger sound is compressed too. The finished file is opened again to check it plays, and if it came out over the size, it is compressed again at a bitrate lowered by exactly how far over it was; if it came out well under with a picture that isn't clean yet, it is compressed once more with more detail. You can then compare the same moment from the original and the compressed video side by side.
To make an animated clip instead, use the video to GIF converter; for photos, use compress an image to a target size.
Questions
How do I compress a video to 10 MB for Discord?
Choose the video, pick 10 MB and press Compress video. The tool works out the bitrate and picture size that fit, compresses it on your device and checks the result: if it comes out over 10 MB, it compresses it again a little smaller. Discord plays the MP4 it makes.
Why does a long video look blocky after compressing?
A size limit is a fixed number of bits for the whole video, so the longer the video, the fewer bits each second gets. Cutting off the parts you don't need, choosing a lower resolution or removing the sound all leave more bits for the rest. The page says before you start when the picture will look blocky.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Your browser's own video encoder compresses it on your device, so it works offline and a large video doesn't have to upload first. The compressed copy has no title, location or camera details from the original.
Can I compress an iPhone video?
Yes. iPhone videos are MOV files in HEVC (H.265). Safari can read them, and so can Chrome and Edge on most computers and phones from the last few years; a browser that can't says so. Portrait videos stay upright.
What format is the compressed video?
An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays on every phone, computer and app. Browsers that can't make H.264, like some Linux builds, make a WebM with VP9 video and Opus sound instead, and the page says so before you start.
Limits
Opens MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV videos up to 4 GB, in H.264, HEVC (H.265), VP8, VP9 and AV1, when your browser can decode them, and needs a browser that can encode video: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (16.4 or later). AVI and WMV files, Apple ProRes, and videos with a see-through background can't be opened.
Sizes from 1 MB to 1,000 MB. A size too small for the length of the video is refused with the smallest size that would work. Long videos take a while: without a hardware video encoder, compressing can take longer than the video plays. Keep the page open until it finishes. Only the main picture and sound tracks are kept; subtitles and extra sound tracks are left out.
HDR videos, which recent iPhones record by default, are turned into standard colours and can look flatter than on the phone.
