How it works
Choose a sound file or a video. Your browser decodes the sound to draw its waveform and to play the part you choose, so you can hear exactly where it starts and ends before you cut.
MP3s are cut without re-encoding: the tool copies the MP3's frames of sound between your start and end, unchanged, and writes a new header so players show the right length. The title, artist, album and cover picture are kept unless you untick them. AAC sound (M4A files and most videos) and Opus or Vorbis sound (Ogg and Opus files) are cut the same way. Each frame is a few hundredths of a second long, so the cut starts up to 0.08 seconds early, which lets its first moment play cleanly, and ends up to 0.03 seconds late.
With fades, or when you choose MP3 or WAV for another kind of file, the sound is decoded and saved again: WAV exactly as decoded, MP3 at 128, 192 or 320 kbps. Fades rise and fall evenly over the time you choose. Every cut is read back to check it plays before it is offered for download.
To cut a video and keep the picture, use the video trimmer; to turn a whole video's sound into an MP3, use video to MP3.
Questions
How do I cut an MP3?
Choose the MP3, drag the handles on the waveform to the start and end you want, or type the times, and press Play the part to hear it. Then press Cut audio and download the cut. Everything happens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
Does cutting an MP3 lower its quality?
Not with MP3, original quality, the default for MP3 files. The cut is made between the MP3's own frames of sound and they are copied unchanged, so it sounds exactly as before. Only fades, or saving as a new MP3, re-encode the sound. M4A, Ogg and Opus files are cut the same way.
Can I add a fade in or fade out?
Yes. Choose a fade in or fade out from half a second to 10 seconds; the waveform shows its shape and Play the part lets you hear it. Fades change the sound, so the cut is saved as a new MP3 or WAV.
Can I make a ringtone or cut the sound from a video?
Yes. Cut the part you want for a ringtone or alarm and save it as an MP3, which Android phones use as is. For a video, choose the video file: only its sound is cut and saved, as an M4A, MP3 or WAV.
Limits
Opens MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, Ogg, Opus and FLAC files, and the sound in MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos, up to 4 GB. The waveform, listening, fades, MP3 and WAV need your browser to decode the sound: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari decode MP3, AAC, Opus, Vorbis, FLAC and WAV. Where a browser can't, MP3, AAC, Opus and Vorbis can still be cut by typing the times. Browsers can't decode Dolby Digital or DTS.
Keeps one part of the file; it doesn't cut a part out of the middle or join files. Cuts can be up to 2 GB (600 MB as MP3). WAV keeps the title and artist but not the cover picture, and sound from a video keeps none of the video's details. Copies keep whole frames, so they can't be cut finer than a frame; choose WAV to cut to the exact sample.
MP3s are made with LAME, the open-source MP3 encoder, in its JavaScript version (lamejs). This site serves an unmodified copy, with its licence and source.
