How it works

Choose a PDF and its first page opens with a crop box over it. Drag the box to move it, drag its edges or corners to resize it, or drag across the page to draw a new one. On a keyboard, the arrow keys move the box and Shift with the arrow keys resizes it. You can also type how much to cut off the top, bottom, left and right, in millimetres, inches or points. Trim white margins finds the content and cuts the white around it for you.

By default every page is cropped the same way. To crop a page on its own, untick “Crop every page the same way” and choose the page. The page list shows how each page will be cropped, and the PDF is saved again in your browser after every change, so the download always matches what is shown. Pages that are turned in the PDF are cropped as you see them.

Cropping sets each page's crop box, the area PDF readers show and print, as Adobe Acrobat's crop tool does. Nothing on the pages is redrawn, and the document's title, links, bookmarks, form fields and attachments stay as they were. To turn pages, use Rotate PDF; to take pages out, use Split PDF; to crop a photo or screenshot, use Crop image.

Questions

How do I crop the white margins off a PDF?

Choose the PDF and press Trim white margins. The tool finds the content on every page and cuts the white around it, keeping all of the content, then you download the cropped PDF. You can drag the box or type the margins to adjust it first. Nothing is uploaded.

Can I crop only one page of a PDF?

Yes. Untick "Crop every page the same way", choose the page under Pages, and drag the crop box on it or type its margins. The other pages keep their own crop, or none. Pages of different sizes can each be cropped to fit.

Is the cropped part deleted from the PDF?

No. Cropping a PDF, here or in Adobe Acrobat, sets the area of each page that readers show. What is cut away is hidden, not removed, and anyone with a PDF editor can bring it back. If it must be gone, for example a name or a number, turn the cropped PDF into images with PDF to JPG, which draws only what shows.

Does cropping a PDF lower its quality?

No. Only the visible area of each page changes. Nothing on the page is drawn again, so text stays sharp and selectable, images aren't re-compressed, and links, bookmarks and form fields keep working.

Limits

What you crop away is hidden, not deleted: the text and images outside the crop are still in the file, where search, copying and PDF editors can find them. To remove them for good, turn the cropped PDF into images with PDF to JPG, which keeps only what shows (the text then stops being selectable). A PDF that was cropped before can be cropped further, but not uncropped here.

Opens one PDF of up to 100 MB at a time. Damaged PDFs that your PDF reader repairs on the fly may not open here. Trim white margins looks for anything that isn't white, so a scan with a grey or speckled background may have little or nothing to trim. When every page is cropped alike, a page too small for the margins is left as it is, and the page says which.

The PDF is written out again, so its size can change a little. A PDF that opens without a password but blocks printing, copying or editing is cropped as it is; those restrictions, and any password, are not carried over to the cropped PDF. A digital signature in the PDF shows as no longer valid after any change, cropping included; the page warns you when it finds one.
