Crop an image

Crop a photo by dragging a box or typing exact pixels, to a square, 16:9 or any shape, and rotate or flip it. iPhone HEIC too, and nothing is uploaded.

or drop it here. JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and most other images, up to 50 MB. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

Choose an image and it opens in your browser with a crop box over it. Drag the box to move it, drag its edges or corners to resize it, or drag across the picture to draw a new one. On a keyboard, the arrow keys move the box and Shift with the arrow keys resizes it.

Pick a shape to keep the box at a fixed ratio, such as square 1:1 for a profile picture, 16:9 for a video thumbnail or 9:16 for a story, or the picture's original shape. For an exact result, type the box's position and size in pixels. You can also turn the picture a quarter turn either way and flip it, and the box follows.

Pressing Crop image copies the pixels inside the box one for one into a new file, in the same format as the original unless you choose JPEG, PNG or WebP. Nothing is uploaded: the image is opened and saved on your device. To make the result an exact size, use resize an image to exact pixels; to change only the format, use the image converter.

Questions

How do I crop a picture to a square?

Choose your image, pick Square 1:1, then drag the box over the part you want to keep and drag a corner to make it larger or smaller. It stays square while you resize it. Press Crop image and download the result.

How do I crop an image to an exact size in pixels?

Type the left edge, top edge, width and height of the crop box in pixels. The box moves to match, and the cropped image is exactly that many pixels, because the pixels are copied one for one rather than resized.

Does cropping an image lower its quality?

The pixels you keep are copied exactly, not resized. PNG files are saved without any loss. JPEG and WebP files have to be saved again, at quality 92%, which is hard to tell apart from the original.

Can I rotate or flip a photo before cropping it?

Yes. Rotate left or right a quarter turn, or flip the picture horizontally or vertically, and the crop box follows the picture. The saved image comes out turned and flipped the way the preview shows it.

Limits

Opens one image at a time, up to 50 MB and 100 megapixels. JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF work in current browsers, and so do iPhone HEIC photos: browsers other than Safari can't open HEIC themselves, so the page first loads a HEIC decoder (about 0.7 MB) from this site, and the photo still stays on your device. SVG drawings aren't cropped.

“Same as original” keeps JPEG, PNG and WebP (WebP becomes JPEG in browsers that can't save it); GIF becomes PNG, and BMP, HEIC and AVIF become JPEG. JPEG and WebP are saved again at quality 92%, and transparent areas turn white in a JPEG. Animated GIFs and WebPs keep only their first frame. A crop larger than this device can draw (phones manage about 16.7 megapixels) is made smaller, and the page says so.

Saving again removes hidden details such as the camera and location, and the colour profile, so colours from wide-gamut cameras can look slightly duller. An uncropped, unturned image in its own format is handed back unchanged.
