How it works

Choose a PNG, JPG or WebP and it is traced straight away: the page picks the main colours, gives every pixel the nearest one, and draws the outline of each area with straight lines and curves. The preview is the SVG file itself, with its size, so you see what you will download. Any image to SVG works the same way, iPhone HEIC photos included.

Logo keeps a few colours and clean edges, Detailed keeps more colours and follows the pixels more closely, and Black and white makes one colour of shapes for cut files and stencils. Change the number of colours or the threshold and the preview updates. Soft edges, where a colour fades into the next, are folded into the colours on either side, so they don't become thin outlines around every shape.

Each colour is a group of its own in the SVG, so cutting machines and design programs see it as a layer. Untick a colour to leave it out. Nothing is uploaded: the picture is traced on your device. To turn the SVG back into a sharp PNG at any size, use SVG to PNG; to make a website icon from it, use the favicon generator.

Questions

Does this make a real vector SVG, or a PNG inside an SVG?

A real vector SVG. The picture is traced into shapes made of lines and curves, one group per colour, with no picture embedded. It stays sharp at any size and can be edited in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma or Cricut Design Space.

How do I convert a PNG to SVG for Cricut?

Choose Black and white for a single-colour cut file: the dark parts become black shapes and the rest stays empty. For a layered design, choose Logo and untick the background colour; each colour is its own group, which Cricut Design Space shows as a separate layer.

Can I convert a JPG or a photo to SVG?

JPG, WebP and most other images work as well as PNG. Logos, icons, drawings and silhouettes trace well. Photos trace poorly: their soft shading turns into many flat patches, which makes a large file that looks like a poster rather than the photo.

How do I remove the white background when converting to SVG?

Untick the white in the list of colours under the preview, and its areas become empty. Transparent areas of a PNG stay empty without doing anything, and Black and white leaves out everything lighter than the threshold.

Limits

Tracing suits logos, icons, text, drawings and silhouettes with clear edges and flat colours. Photos, gradients and soft shadows trace poorly: they become many flat patches and a large file. Up to 32 colours. Thin lines a pixel or two wide may come out uneven, and very small specks are dropped.

Opens one image at a time, up to 50 MB and 100 megapixels. Pictures over 1 megapixel are traced at 1 megapixel, which is plenty for a logo, and small ones are enlarged before tracing for smoother curves; either way the SVG opens at the picture's own size. Parts less than half opaque count as transparent. Animated GIFs and WebPs are traced from their first frame. Shapes of neighbouring colours get a thin outline in their own colour, so no hairline gaps show between them.
