How it works

Choose a PDF and its pages appear below. Pick a tool and click or drag on a page: Text starts a text box where you click, in Helvetica, Times or Courier at any size and colour; White-out covers an area in white (or the paper's colour); Highlight marks text like a highlighter pen; Box, Ellipse, Line and Arrow draw shapes; Tick and Cross mark boxes on printed forms; and Image adds a picture, such as a logo or a stamp. Drag anything to move it and drag its handle to resize it. Undo takes back a change.

If the PDF has form fields, they are shaded on the page: type in them, tick them or pick a choice, as in a PDF reader.

When you save, everything is drawn into the pages' own content in your browser, like ink on paper, and the form's fields get their new values. The rest of the PDF isn't drawn again: its text stays sharp and searchable, and its title, links and bookmarks stay as they were. Typed text is real text, so it can be selected and searched too.

Questions

How do I edit a PDF for free without signing up?

Choose the PDF, pick a tool (Text, White-out, Highlight, Box, Ellipse, Line, Arrow, Tick, Cross or Image), then click or drag on a page. Click a form field to fill it in. Press Save PDF and download the edited PDF. There is no account, and the PDF is never uploaded: it is edited in your browser.

Can I change the text that is already in a PDF?

No. This editor adds to the PDF; it can't change words that are already there. To change a word, cover it with white-out and type the new word over it with the Text tool, which is what most free PDF editors do as well.

Does white-out delete the text under it?

Not on its own. White-out covers what is under it, like correction tape, but the covered text is still in the file and can be copied or found by search. To remove it for good, tick Remove what white-out covers for good: the pages with white-out are then saved as pictures, so their text can't be selected or searched afterwards.

How do I fill in a PDF form?

Open the PDF and click a field on the page to type in it, tick a box or pick from a list; the fields are the shaded boxes. Save the PDF to download it filled in. The fields stay fillable, so the PDF can still be changed in any PDF reader. Forms that are only flat pages, with no fields, can be filled by adding text with the Text tool.

Limits

This editor can't change or delete the text and pictures already in a PDF: it adds on top of them. White-out hides what it covers but leaves it in the file unless you choose to remove it for good, which turns the pages with white-out into pictures; their text can't be selected or searched afterwards, and form fields and links on them are removed. White-out covers the page itself, not form fields or comments on top of it.

Text that uses letters outside Western European ones (Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, emoji) is added as a picture of the text. Form fields are drawn in Helvetica; fields holding other letters are left for the PDF reader to draw. XFA forms, made by some versions of Adobe LiveCycle, can't be filled in. Opens one PDF of up to 100 MB at a time, with up to 500 added things.

Restrictions on printing or copying set in the original are not carried over, and a PDF opened with its password is saved without one. A PDF that holds a digital signature shows that signature as no longer valid after any change; the page warns you when it finds one.
