Tap tempo
Tap the button in time with the beat, or press Space or Enter on it. A pause of a few seconds starts a new count.
– BPM
Tap at least twice.
How it works
Choose one or more songs: MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, Ogg or Opus files, or a video whose sound you want measured. The sound is decoded in your browser and listened to for the moments where notes and drum hits start. The tempo is the beat length at which those moments repeat most evenly, checked against the whole song so it is measured to a fraction of a beat per minute.
Each song shows one tempo, rounded to a whole number, with the half and double tempos beside it and how long one beat lasts in milliseconds, which is handy for setting a delay or a metronome. Tempo detection can be off by half or double on some songs, so if the number doesn't match what you hear, tap along to check.
The tap tempo counter works without a file: tap the button in time with any music and it shows the BPM of your taps, fitted to all of them so one early or late tap counts for little. To cut a song to a loop, use the MP3 cutter; to change its format, the audio converter.
Questions
How do I find the BPM of a song?
Choose the song's MP3 or other audio file, or drop it on the page, and its tempo in beats per minute appears in a few seconds. You can add a whole folder of songs at once and each gets its own BPM. If you don't have the file, play the song and tap the Tap button along with the beat: the tap BPM counter works out the tempo from your taps.
Why is the BPM half or double what I expected?
A beat can be counted at more than one speed: a song at 140 BPM can feel like 70 if you nod along to every other beat, and some songs are written down at half or double the speed most people tap. The detector picks the speed where the drum hits fall most evenly, which is usually the written tempo, and shows the half and double values beside it in case your count is one of those. Songs with a very busy or syncopated rhythm are the most likely to come out at half or double.
How accurate is the BPM detector?
For music with a steady beat, the tempo is measured over the whole song, so it is usually within a fraction of a beat per minute; in testing on made-up drum and click tracks from 60 to 180 BPM it was within 0.3 BPM. Songs whose tempo drifts, like a live band without a click track, get their average tempo. Music with no clear beat, such as ambient or classical pieces, may get no result or a faint one, which the page says.
Can it find the BPM of a song on Spotify or YouTube?
No. It only measures sound files on your device, because looking a song up by name or link would mean sending what you search for to another site. If you can play the song, use tap tempo: tap along for ten seconds or so and the BPM shows as you go.
Limits
Opens MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, Ogg and Opus files, and the sound in MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos, up to 50 files at a time. Only the first 10 minutes of each are measured, so a long DJ mix gets the tempo of its start. It finds one tempo per song: a song that changes speed gets the tempo it keeps longest, and it doesn't find the musical key.
Decoding uses your browser's own decoder, so a format the browser can't decode, such as AAC in some Linux browsers, can't be measured there. In testing on a computer, a 4-minute MP3 took about 4 seconds.
